Egyptian Canadian share all Egyptians their concerns with regard to the constitution amendment

- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -
(Ottawa, May 2, 2019) Egyptian Canadian monitored with great concern the latest attempt from the Egyptian regime to fully control the county, while Egypt has been administrated by an illegitimate constitution, the regime amend it to give the presidency and the army the full control over the constitution and the legal system.

In January of 2011, the Egyptian people took to the streets and to Tahrir Square chanting against a regime that was destroying the country and calling for bread, freedom, social justice, and human dignity, 8 years later Egyptians have been pressured and bribed to vote for a referendum that is taking from them whatever remain of dignity.

Since the military shatter the newborn democracy and grape the power after their coup in July 2013, since then Egypt is suffering from a regime that known of its violation of Human Rights, violation been documented and reported by international credible organizations. It has been known and reported that the Egyptian regime suspended freedom of expression and control the juridical system, imprison more than 60 thousands of peaceful political and human rights activists, executed hundreds without due process, in additional to its usage of the force disappearance and the target killing to eliminate any dissident voice.

In spite that the regime run two presidential elections, parliamentary election, and passed it is own constitution in votes controlled by the security forces, with no challenge in mocked process, and in spite that the juridical system is control by the government, now Sisi's regime is modifying the constitution to include more power.

Under the amendment, Sisi got a special article to allow him to govern up to 2030, and appoint the army as a custody for the country who can over through any elected government or president while the supreme military counsel is the one who appoint the minister of defence.

More over and more dangerous the new amendment abolish the necessity of the approval of any government contract or agreement by the court, open the door for more corruption and abuse of power.

Egyptians did get their fair share as most of the world and didn't get the support their deserve, to the contrary Egyptians have been left alone to struggle for their stolen democracy and their dignity.

ECCD Affirms its Commitment and Regrets the Recent Comments

The Egyptian Canadian Coalition for Democracy affirms its full commitment to rejecting the military coup of July 3rd 2013 and its consequences, and regrets the recent baseless personal comments against Mr, Ehab Lotayef, a well respected pro-democracy advocate with an indisputable track record of supporting legitimacy, freedoms and human rights in Egypt.

ECCD affirms its full commitment to its founding principles at the core of which is "to call for an immediate end to the military rule, and reject the military coup of July 2013 and all its consequences." As such, ECCD has not and shall not engage in any initiative or activity that promotes or may be perceived to promote any of the key figures of the coup as a choice for our people or insufficiently address the issue of legitimacy. Any personal initiative or engagement of one or a group of its members or supporters that is inconsistent with ECCD founding principles and this affirmation is not endorsed by ECCD and should never be construed as such. We understand that reasonable and sincere people may differ in their views on what is helpful to the cause of democracy and human rights in Egypt. We have engaged and will continue to engage other individuals and organizations working to oppose the coup and its consequences but our main focus continues to be our own work in Canada to raise awareness about the reality of the situation in Egypt, to provide a platform for Egyptian Canadians working for democracy, and to advocate for human rights, democracy, and legitimacy in Egypt.

The Egyptian Canadian Coalition as a platform for all sincere anti-coup, pro-Egyptian freedoms and human rights advocates, fully understands that its members and supporters might, from time to time, engage in personal initiatives based on an interpretation of ECCD founding principles that may not be shared by the organization. This should not lead pro-democracy workers to attack each other or impugn each other's commitment to our shared work. Our struggle is with the coup regime, not with each other. We therefore regret the recent attacks on the personal character, integrity, and commitment of Mr. Ehab Lotayef, a serving board member and past President of ECCD. Mr. Lotayef has been and remains an anti-coup and pro-freedoms and human rights advocate. His anti-coup, pro-democracy views are indisputable and are a matter of public record. The attacks on Mr. Lotayef are regrettable, baseless, and wrong.

We encourage all pro-democracy activists to solicit input and coordinate with other pro-democracy activists prior to embarking on initiatives that may impact the solidarity of the anti-military rule camp. Similarly we encourage all pro-democracy activists to evaluate individual initiatives on their own merit and refrain from personal attacks. Let us redouble our efforts to raise awareness and to advocate for human rights, democracy, and legitimacy in Egypt.

Detention, Killing and Inhumane Treatment in Egypt's Jails

The Egyptian military regime is reaching new lows every day. There are tens of thousands held in it's jails, many without accusation or trials. All those held for political reasons are subject to systematic torture and inhuman treatment regardless of their age, medical situation, special needs or vulnerabilities, this has been reported several time by Human Right Watch.

Those detained are denied international mandated family visits and medical care. Under such conditions what can be claimed as "natural" death is nothing short of extra judicial execution.

And the punishment sometimes goes beyond death, as was the case for M. Mahdi Akef, a well known opposition figure and the former supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood who passed away Friday while in custody of the regime.

Mr. Akef was denied, as many others, family visits and appropriate medical care disregarding his age, as an 89 year old, and his illness, as a cancer patient. After his passing he was also denied a normal family funeral by the authorities; only four (4) persons allowed to be present in his funeral.

Mr. Akef's case brings to light the extreme suffering of prisoners in Egypt and puts a responsibility on world governments, especially those who have strong relations with the Egypt military regime, civil society and interaction organizations to put pressure on the Egyptian regime to stop torture, arbitrary detentions, apply international prison standards and allow international monitoring and inspection to Egyptian prisons.

We call on the Canadian government to step up its efforts on this front without delay.
